Wine Noob
Posted by David | Filed under Mini Post
I am a wine noob, I am not afraid to admit it. I have no idea what I am looking about when I stand in the grocery/liquor/wine store, staring at the shelves/racks of wine. I am no closer at restaurants. Often I find myself assuming that the higher the price the better the wine… or maybe the rarer the wine.
However, I have had many glasses/bottles that were cheap— and I enjoyed them, and have tried more expensive varients and found those not to my taste. So how do I decide? I wing it, I look at labels, I buy by price (and that can go either way depending on my mood). My most preferred method is the recommendation. Someone else has tried it and proclaimed it wonderful or swill. But what if you don’t have a ton of fellow drinkers to ask? Enter the web and the social network tools based around wine.
Today I came across Snooth, which claims
Snooth is the world’s largest and most comprehensive wine database, featuring millions of reviews and hundreds of thousands of wines. We make it easy for wine lovers to find better wine, seamlessly purchase wine, and enjoy a community.
Which seems a lot like Cork’d, but I was able to find a wine that I am supposed to like in about 10 seconds. I’ll be giving each a try. What do you use?

August 27th, 2008 at 10:53 amHi David, I suspect i’m even more of a wine noob than you are. i can’t even remember recommendations that friends give me, i always let other people order at restaurants, and i drink mostly wines at home that were gifts. that said, i like wine quite a bit and always wish i knew more.
the thing i do know is whether i like a wine when i drink it.
so, in response to your post, while i can appreciate the value of a good recommendation, for me the problem to solve is how i remember wines that i drink that i like.
for instance, i’m at a restaurant and someone orders a wonderful bottle of wine. sometimes i’m ambitious enough to write it down in my blackberry. usually not. if there were a mobile tool that let me remember what i drank, and do it super fast and inconspicuously, that would be hella neat. but i’m not talking about a little notepad application. i mean something that could identify the wine, tell me a bit about it, and let me order it later.
seems like there could be some money in that?
thoughts?

Have you tried Jott – jott.com. It is free and fast. It would not give you info on the bottle you were looking at, but you could look it up later. I use Jott all the time and using it for wine would be really simple.
Just a thought.
